Introduction

Online education is usually advertised as a way to learn at your own pace and earn your degree without missing out on the important things in life. Most students who take online courses will tell you that is false advertisement. In 2016, more than 6.3 million students enrolled online and the success rate was horrible. Research shows that students who take an online course are 10 to 20 times more likely to drop out or fail the course. Some students are capable of getting the information on their own and other students are not that independent. Many online students have stated that once they fall behind it's easier to drop out or fail. Students have also stated that when they have trouble navigating through the instructor's course page that it discourages them from completing the work. I can personally back this statement up as I have experienced the same discouragement and frustration. Student failure rates are higher with online education, because there are improvements

Online Education is the New Struggle

Most students are struggling or failing their online courses because many of them find it harder to engage digitally.     Due to the fact that I am a student myself who is also taking online courses, I immediately sparked interest in this topic because I am currently going through the same issue now. Ever since Covid-19, a majority of school systems decided to do virtual learning for the safety of the students and staff. For most of these students digital learning came completely new to them, including myself. I know that a lot of students were not prepared for virtual learning because the pandemic did come as a shock for most. Students were expecting to be going back to the classrooms face-to-face with their instructors, not at home on a computer screen.   I also took interest in this topic because I am seeking ways that could help me improve with my engagement online. As mentioned in the article, many students find it nearly impossible to navigate through online courses or programs

Internet Zombies!

I feel like it should go without questioning that social media is zombifying the public. Nearly everyone has a phone nowadays, even kids! Social media has become so widely used that it is becoming normal to see kids on these social apps and not think much of it. In fact, people are thinking much at all when they are carelessly scrolling down their timeline. I see all the time in public how glued people will be to their phones and will have their heads down while walking, not realizing they are about to bump into something or someone. As stated in the article ‘Learn from These Bugs. Don’t Let Social Media Zombify You,” the chemical dopamine spikes in our brains at the sight of likes coming in. Scientists have afflicted the brain response to social media to the response of drug/alcohol addiction. That is why many people have developed phantom vibration syndrome where they believe that their phone is vibrating when it is not.   Additionally, because social media has become such a normal

Stand By Me

The song “Stand by Me” by Ben E. King is a popular and excellent song with a great message. The song is familiar worldwide because everyone can relate to it. The message in the song “Stand by Me” is that no matter how strong you are, at some point we all just need someone to stand by us.    The artist Ben E. King communicates through the song that it is ok for anyone to need someone by their side because as humans we all need somebody. He also communicates that things are easier to handle when you have someone standing by your side because there’s less weight for one person to carry. For example, when he says, “No I won’t shed a tear, just as long as you stand by me.”   I love the message that the song conveys because it tells us that it is ok to be vulnerable. I believe that this a good message for everyone to hear especially with us being in such an egoic society, many people believe that they do not need anyone. This song reminds them that we all need someone at some point and the

Appealing to Your Audience

Image
Communication is a very important skill to have, as well as how you are communicating. There are different forms of communication. Communication can be through written text, orally, or non-verbal communication. Which form of communication that you use should be chosen based on who your audience is. For instance, you would not want to write a document for a small child that may or may not be able to read up to a certain level. The best form of communication for this audience would probably be visually since a child’s verbal skills are probably not all the way developed.     How you visually appeal to the audience is key in getting the message across and understood. If you are informing an individual of new information about their skeletal bones, a visual media such as an informative video would probably be the best option for your audience. The purpose of a visual media is to better demonstrate or display how something works. For example, the “Bone Remodeling and Modeling” video used bo

The Oldest Sport!

Image
There is much room for debate about what sport is the oldest. Wrestling is most commonly known as the oldest sport, however so is running. Both sports come in a variety of styles and are still common in modern day sports. Evidence for both wrestling and running being among the oldest sports have been found in cave paintings in Lascaux, France. These paintings on the walls date back to almost 15,300 years ago, therefore it is hard to pinpoint exactly when running and wrestling developed as sports.               Running is the most accessible sport because it requires no equipment. This is also a reason that some believe running to be the first sport. A foot race was the first ever event to take place in the first ever Olympics in 776 BCE. Running has evolved into different sports, such as: Javelin thrown, polo, hockey, etc. Running is still popular in modern day sports, especially in track and field.              Wrestling is very popular because it has been practiced w

Credit His Hard Work!

There is quite some controversy and debate about whether or not Thomas Edison should receive credit for the invention of the light bulb. Although Edison may not have come up with the idea of the light bulb himself, he should still receive his credit for successfully creating the light bulb. The idea of the light bulb was around for some time before Edison’s creation. As mentioned in Ripley’s article, there were already about 20 inventors across the world with various drafts of the light bulb. It is also mentioned that there were various different forms in which the light bulb was drafted, which tells me that Edison did not copycat someone’s invention. Edison seen a problem and found a solution and therefore should be given his credit. Edison envisioned lighting up a whole city, and in order to do so he created a research team. Edison understood that in order to make his vision possible he would be more efficient with the help of a team. Not only did he need a team, but Edison knew
