Race and Politics

George Edwin Taylor became the first African American man in America to run for president in 1904. Kamala Harris has become the first African American woman to run for vice president, alongside Joe Biden. Being the first to do something can be a tough position to fulfill. Off the bat because you are the first to do something and since nobody has seen it done before, people are ultimately going to doubt you. That is the biggest obstacle that these two candidates had to or have to overcome. Taylor was taken for a joke when he decided to run for president. The white men did not think he had the same capabilities as them because he was a black man. Harris is now experiencing this same treatment but with way much more pressure than Taylor faced. Harris has to push so much harder just to prove to people that she is capable of being Vice President. Harris is not only proving herself because she is African American, but also because she is a woman. Women had to fight for their rights in politics and the government. Just like the white man looked down upon a black man they looked down upon women as well. Kamala Harris’ run for Vice President is so significant to the black community because it will show others that they have the power to make change and encourage them to take the actions to make this change come about. Harris is respectfully following Taylor’s quote, “Yes, I know most white folks take me as a joke…I am beginning to see that I got to take care of my own interests, and what’s more is that I have the power to do it.” Both these candidates represent change and that despite your race, sex, or who doubts you, you have the power.
